Official Launch of Campaign for Referendum on Proposed Greater Manchester Executive Mayor

Saturday 10th January saw the official launch of a campaign to secure a referendum on the proposed elected executive Mayor for Greater Manchester imposed by the current Westminster administration

Unlock Democracy – Greater Manchester local group does not oppose the principle of an elected Mayor for the Greater Manchester area (to head up the existing Greater Manchester Combined Authority), provided there is clear and demonstrable demand for this position of considerable local influence. A public mandate to establish this post would fulfil a guiding principle of citizen driven policy.

City of Manchester (one of ten metropolitan districts comprising Greater Manchester) voters chose to reject the post of elected Mayor (on a relatively small turnout) in an earlier referendum.

The campaign petition, hosted by 38 Degrees, can be viewed at the following URL; https://you.38degrees.org.uk/petitions/people-must-have-right-to-vote-on-devo-manc/

The campaign features a broad alliance of civic society groups, including Trade Unions, Equality Campaigners, Environmental Groups and local Green Party Members.
