Guest blog from James Grindrod, Unlock Democracy London Chair
Fixing London’s broken democracy could have been easily ignored, but Unlock Democracy London is making the candidates for London Mayor listen.
Our campaign asking the candidates for Mayor of London to Stand Up For Democracy is doing really well. It’s less than 2 weeks to go till we get to have our say on the next Mayor of London. So far we have had responses from Sadiq Khan, Siân Berry, Caroline Pidgeon, Peter Whittle, and George Galloway.
We have yet to hear from Zac Goldsmith, but we would really like to know what he thinks. You can ask him to stand up for democracy in less time than it takes to get a tube from Tottenham Court Road to Holborn!
We are asking two things: if candidates would support a campaign to introduce proportional voting for council and/or Westminster elections; and what they would do to improve how the Mayor is held to account.
Hundreds of people from across London have taken action, resulting in thousands of emails going to candidates. With two weeks to go to the election, join them and put London’s broken democracy on the next Mayor’s agenda.
I’ll be back in touch after the election results to ask you what our next steps should be for the Stand Up for Democracy London campaign. Till then please keep take action.
